According to the data compiled by the U.S.-China Economic and Security Review Commission, in February 2013, U.S. exports to China saw a significant increase, nearly doubling due to the influence of the Chinese Lunar New Year holiday. However, this surge was accompanied by a similar rise in Chinese imports, which led to an expansion in the trade deficit between the two countries. In response, the U.S. Trade Representative’s Office and the Department of the Treasury urged the new Chinese government to further open its markets and improve trade conditions. In February, bilateral trade between the U.S. and China declined by 10% compared to the previous month. However, when seasonal factors were excluded, the trade volume continued to grow, with a 13% increase in the first two months of the year. Analysts expect that the annual trade deficit could reach a record high, highlighting growing concerns over the imbalance in trade relations. Despite a 9% year-on-year increase in U.S. exports to China in 2012, the growth in imports from China outpaced that of exports by 2.7 percentage points, marking a larger gap than in 2011. This trend underscores the persistent challenge the U.S. faces in balancing its trade with China. The primary goods the U.S. exports to China include agricultural products, transportation equipment, and chemicals. On the other hand, the main imports from China are computers and electronic products, which make up about one-third of total U.S. imports from China. However, the growth rate of these items is much lower compared to other major import categories, suggesting that China's export growth to the U.S. is largely driven by low-value-added goods such as textiles, leather products, and miscellaneous manufactured items. Looking at the past two months, China’s exports to the U.S. have shown a mix of high- and low-value-added products, reflecting the complexity of their trade relationship. While some sectors show strong growth, others remain stagnant or even decline, pointing to broader structural issues in the trade dynamic between the two nations.
