In a significant development for the automotive industry, the "Technical Specifications for Urea Solutions for Vehicles," organized by the China Automotive Engineering Society, has officially been released. This document is considered the most authoritative standard in the field of automotive urea, marking a major step forward in regulating this essential product. Vehicle urea has emerged as a key component in response to increasingly stringent emission regulations for heavy-duty diesel vehicles. With the implementation of the National IV exhaust emission standards, the domestic market for vehicle urea has begun to take shape. A growing number of foreign companies, state-owned enterprises, and private firms have entered the market, driven by the need for cleaner emissions. However, the lack of a unified national standard has led to inconsistencies in quality and performance. Prior to this release, China only had three local standards in Beijing, Shenzhen, and Shanghai, with varying requirements. This inconsistency created challenges for both manufacturers and users. As a result, there was a pressing need for a comprehensive and standardized technical specification that could guide the industry effectively. In September 2011, the Fuels and Lubricants Branch of the China Automotive Engineering Society held a meeting in Nanjing and decided that Jiangsu Kelansu Automotive Environmental Protection Technology Co., Ltd. and Sinopec Tianjin Yuetai Petrochemical Technology Co., Ltd. would jointly develop the technical specifications for vehicle urea solutions. The new specifications cover a wide range of technical parameters, including urea content, density, biuret levels, and trace metal impurities such as calcium, iron, copper, zinc, chromium, and nickel. They also provide detailed guidelines on storage, transportation, and usage, ensuring safe and effective application. Additionally, the document outlines suitable materials for storage containers, such as austenitic alloys, polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) without additives, and other high-quality plastics. Industry experts view the release of these specifications as a timely and necessary move. It aligns with the global trend of stricter emission controls and offers a solid foundation for the development of the vehicle urea market. The standard not only helps ensure product quality but also supports supply chain management, quality control, and corporate compliance. Despite its importance, the specification is not mandatory. According to an official from the China Automotive Engineering Society, this is due to the current absence of national standards and the early stage of the vehicle urea industry. The goal is to create a unified framework that accommodates different regional practices while promoting consistency. Looking ahead, the Ministry of Environmental Protection is working on drafting a national standard for vehicle urea solutions, which will further strengthen the regulatory landscape. For now, this technical specification serves as a critical reference for manufacturers, suppliers, and users alike, helping to build a more reliable and sustainable market.
