Cabbage root rot is a common bacterial disease affecting cruciferous vegetables, particularly in the heart of the plant. This condition, also known as bacterial soft rot, typically occurs through wounds on the plant and leads to decay in the stems, roots, and inner leaves. Initially, the infected areas appear water-soaked and translucent, then gradually turn brown, soft, and eventually rot. A foul odor often accompanies the infection, and the affected tissues may exude a sticky, mucus-like substance.
This disease thrives in warm and humid conditions, making it especially prevalent in southern regions during the summer months. If left untreated, it can spread rapidly and cause significant damage to the crop. To manage cabbage root rot effectively, it's important to apply appropriate bactericides at the right time.
One effective treatment is to spray a 72% agricultural streptomycin soluble powder diluted at a ratio of 3000 times. Alternatively, a 14% copper oxychloride solution mixed at 350 times strength can be used. Another option is to apply a 20% thiazole zinc (or quinolinone) solution diluted at 800 times. It's recommended to alternate between these treatments every 7 days, applying them 2–3 times for best results.
In addition to chemical control, practicing good agricultural hygiene, such as removing infected plants and avoiding overwatering, can help prevent the spread of the disease. Early detection and prompt action are key to reducing losses and ensuring a healthy harvest. Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions when using any pesticide to ensure safety and effectiveness.
