In a significant development for the automotive industry, the "Technical Specifications for Urea Solutions for Vehicles," organized by the China Automotive Engineering Society, has officially been released. This document marks the most authoritative standard in the field of automotive urea, setting a crucial benchmark for quality and performance.
Vehicle urea was developed in response to increasingly strict emission regulations for heavy-duty diesel vehicles. With the implementation of the National IV exhaust emission standards, the domestic market for vehicle urea began to take shape. As a result, numerous foreign companies, state-owned enterprises, and private firms have entered the market, aiming to meet the growing demand.
The quality of vehicle urea directly affects engine performance, making it essential to maintain high standards. In countries like Europe, the United States, and Japan, advanced technologies and well-established application guidelines for vehicle urea are already in place. However, before this release, China lacked national or industry-wide standards for automotive urea, with only three local standards in Beijing, Shenzhen, and Shanghai. These varied significantly in their requirements, creating confusion and inconsistency across the sector.
To address this gap, the China Automotive Engineering Society's Fuels and Lubricants Branch convened a meeting in Nanjing in September 2011. At that time, it was decided that Jiangsu Kelansu Automotive Environmental Protection Technology Co., Ltd. and Sinopec Tianjin Yuetai Petrochemical Technology Co., Ltd. would jointly develop the technical specifications for vehicle urea solutions.
According to the information obtained, the new specification outlines key technical parameters and proper usage guidelines for vehicle urea. It covers aspects such as storage, transportation, and application, specifying 18 critical factors including urea content, density, biuret levels, and the presence of minerals like calcium, iron, copper, zinc, chromium, and nickel. Additionally, it provides recommendations for materials used in storage containers, such as austenitic alloys, polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) without additives, and other plastics like polyethylene and polypropylene.
Industry experts view this standard as timely and essential, aligning with the global trend of stricter emissions regulations for heavy-duty diesel vehicles. The standard is considered scientific, forward-looking, and practical, offering guidance for the supply chain, quality control, and internal testing by companies.
However, an official from the China Automotive Engineering Society clarified that the "Technical Specifications for Urea Solutions for Vehicles" are not mandatory. This decision was made due to the absence of national standards at the time, as the urea industry was still in its early stages and had limited market penetration. The specification aims to unify existing differences and establish a common framework.
It is also reported that the Ministry of Environmental Protection is currently working on drafting a national standard for vehicle urea solutions, which will likely provide a more formal regulatory foundation in the future.
