The use of solar panels in agriculture is still in its early stages, but it's gaining momentum, especially in the construction of modern greenhouses across Beijing and other northern cities. There are various types of greenhouses being developed, such as those with solar panels on the roof, those with gable structures covered by solar panels, and even fully covered greenhouses that incorporate solar technology into both the roof and side walls. In terms of function, these greenhouses serve different purposes—some are designed for crop production, others focus on trade like flower markets, and some are dedicated to agricultural research and development. By using solar panels as a covering material, these structures not only harness renewable energy but also enhance the overall environmental conditions inside the greenhouse.

A significant portion of the global solar panel market is being allocated to agricultural greenhouses. For instance, 20% of the 50 million square meters of solar panels produced annually in China are used for this purpose. In North America and Europe, the figure is even higher, with 70% of the 60 million square meters of solar panels used in agricultural greenhouses each year. As one of the world’s largest agricultural nations, China faces challenges such as a growing population and limited arable land. To address this, the country is investing in high-efficiency greenhouses as part of its demonstration agricultural projects. These next-generation greenhouses will rely heavily on advanced materials like solar panels, particularly the Mi-shaped ones, which are now commonly used in building facades. With their increasing adoption, solar panels are set to become a key component in the future of sustainable farming and smart agriculture.
