Natural diamonds have been recognized as the hardest material in nature since they were discovered more than 2,700 years ago. However, Chinese scientists have successfully synthesized new materials with hardness twice that of natural diamonds. Chinese material scientist, Professor Tian Yongjun from Yanshan University, teamed up with Prof. Ma Jingming from Jilin University and Professor Wang Yanbin from the University of Chicago to successfully synthesize nano twinned diamond blocks with hardness twice that of natural diamond under high temperature and high pressure. The research results were published in the international authoritative journal Natural, published on June 12th. It was a breakthrough that was made after the synthesis of extremely hard nanocrystalline cubic boron nitride in 2013.
