Abstract According to Menge Rui, Vice President of Saint-Gobain Abrasives Asia Pacific, the company has recently introduced three major product categories: superhard abrasives, bonded abrasives, and coated abrasives. Among these, two new products in the bonded abrasives segment have generated significant interest. One of them is Yitrium 3, a ceramic-bonded grinding wheel that offers improved grinding efficiency, surface finish, wheel life, and machining accuracy compared to traditional binders. It is widely used in the electronics, aerospace, and automotive industries, particularly for enhancing the performance of grinding wheels during precision operations. The second product is "Norton iiHumming Bird," a high-performance ceramic tool grinding wheel designed for small part precision grinding in the electronics sector. It utilizes high-quality corundum abrasives combined with Saint-Gobain’s innovative Yitrium 3 ceramic bond technology, ensuring excellent shape retention, structural uniformity, and stable grinding performance.
In the superhard abrasive category, Saint-Gobain has launched CBN (Cubic Boron Nitride) grinding wheels known for their high cost-effectiveness and long service life. These are ideal for demanding applications requiring high-speed and precision grinding. On the coated abrasives side, the newly released "Norton" industrial scouring pad features a non-woven fabric structure made from Fear-tex, combining a non-woven nylon mesh with abrasive particles using an advanced adhesive system. This design offers anti-blocking, waterproof, and corrosion-resistant properties, making it suitable for surface cleaning, deburring, conditioning, and achieving a fine final finish. A wide range of abrasive types, particle sizes, and backing materials ensures flexibility for different user needs.
Menge Rui highlighted that Saint-Gobain has been operating in China for nearly 20 years and now employs over 10,000 people across the country, making it deeply embedded in the local market. He believes the company's future in China will continue to grow due to several factors. First, the demand for high-quality standardized products is increasing, and Saint-Gobain is well-equipped to meet this need. Second, the government’s push for industrial upgrading requires higher grinding efficiency and more sophisticated solutions, which Saint-Gobain can provide. Lastly, the company has invested heavily in R&D since its establishment in China, further strengthening its competitive edge.
Saint-Gobain also recently developed the first comprehensive technical manual tailored for the Chinese market. Covering solid abrasives, superhard abrasives, coated abrasives, and even resin-cut sheets used in the automotive industry, this guide offers a full solution for various applications. Beyond being a technical resource, it represents a wealth of accumulated experience and marks a first in the Chinese abrasive industry.
