Two young inventors from Dadong District's Dongxin Primary School, Ma Yihui and Ma Jing, both 11 years old, have created a smart bus reminder system designed to make waiting for public transport less frustrating. Their innovative project aims to provide commuters with real-time updates on when the next bus will arrive, significantly reducing uncertainty during wait times.
The device features a compact design with solar panels powering the system, ensuring energy efficiency and sustainability. An LED display clearly shows the estimated time until the bus arrives, making it user-friendly and straightforward. The mechanism relies on infrared signals to transmit bus arrival information between stations, allowing each station to relay precise timing details to the next stop.
During a demonstration, Ma Yihui explained that the idea stemmed from personal experiences of long, cold waits for buses in winter. She expressed frustration over not knowing whether a bus was coming or if one should consider alternative routes. This inspired her to develop a solution that could inform passengers about upcoming arrivals at a glance.
Ma Jing added that they conducted research to better understand community needs regarding public transportation. Their efforts paid off as their creation earned recognition at the 2012 National Youth Science and Technology Innovation Competition, securing a third-place award. Reflecting on this achievement, Ma Yihui shared her aspirations to become a female electronics engineer, motivated by the lessons learned throughout this inventive journey.
This experience reinforced her belief in identifying everyday challenges and tackling them head-on through creativity and perseverance—qualities she admires in inventors like Thomas Edison. As they continue refining their prototype, these young innovators hope their work contributes positively towards enhancing urban mobility while fostering greater interest in STEM fields among peers.
