Two young inventors, Ma Yihui and Ma Jing, both 11 years old from Dongxin Primary School in Dadong District, have created a smart bus reminder device. This device is designed to help passengers know exactly when the next bus will arrive at the station.
The invention features a solar-powered system with panels that supply energy to the entire mechanism, ensuring sustainability even in areas with limited access to electricity. An LED display shows the estimated time until the bus's arrival, while the transmission of bus arrival information is handled via infrared signals. The reminder device communicates with the next station through a dedicated radio channel, updating the display with the exact arrival time of the bus.
During a demonstration, Ma Yihui explained how the system works. When a vehicle approaches the station, it transmits its unique identifier using infrared technology. The station processes this information, calculates the expected arrival time at the next station, and relays this data to the next station’s display. This process ensures that passengers are kept informed about the bus's status in real-time.
Ma Yihui shared her motivation behind the invention. "In winter, waiting for a bus can be really cold and frustrating, especially when you don’t know when the next one will come," she said. "I wanted to create something that could help people know when the bus would arrive, making their wait more bearable."
The duo conducted research to better understand the needs of commuters. Their efforts paid off when they won the national third prize in the student category of the National Science and Technology Innovation Competition in 2012. Ma Yihui expressed her aspirations, saying, "I want to become an electronics engineer in the future. This invention taught me that I need to identify problems in everyday life and work hard to solve them, just like Edison did."
Their creation has gained attention not only locally but also nationwide. As part of their journey, Ma Yihui and Ma Jing learned valuable lessons about perseverance and innovation. "This experience has shown me that every problem can lead to a solution if we're willing to try," Ma Jing added.
These young innovators hope their invention will soon be adopted by public transport systems across China, improving the daily lives of countless passengers. Their story is a testament to the power of creativity and determination in solving real-world challenges.
