TIMKEN® Roll Neck Bearing (3): Protection

Roller Neck Bearing Protection
Proper maintenance of roller neck bearings is essential to ensure their longevity and optimal performance. These bearings should be periodically removed and inspected from the mill, depending on operating conditions. Typically, protection intervals are set at three months for full-load operations, six months for most mills, and twelve months for lighter applications. After the initial 1000 hours of operation, bearings should be carefully examined. During each inspection, the bearing should be completely removed along with the oil seal. If necessary, the oil seal should be replaced. If no issues are found, the next inspection can be extended—such as every 2000 hours or more. Each time a bearing is removed, it's important to document its orientation and position within the rolling mill. This helps in tracking the wear pattern and ensures proper reinstallation. Timken provides a bearing protection service card that allows users to record key details like the housing number, roll number, rack number, bearing orientation, ring area, product tonnage, and operational hours. This card should be updated regularly for easy reference by maintenance personnel. The standard procedure for bearing protection includes: 1. **Tracking and Recording**: Note the bearing’s position and orientation in the mill. Use the provided service card to log all relevant data. 2. **Removing the Bearing**: Carefully remove the bearing from the housing using specialized lifting tools, which can be supplied by Timken. 3. **Cleaning the Bearing**: Remove any dirt, water, or residual lubricant that could cause premature wear. Small bearings can be cleaned with mineral oil or solvents, while larger ones may require neutral oil in a cleaning box. 4. **Inspection and Minor Repairs**: Check the outer surface for signs of damage such as cracks or flaking. Light surface imperfections can be sanded down. 5. **Measuring Clearance**: Regularly check the bearing clearance to assess wear. 6. **Inspecting the Housing**: Ensure the bearing housing is in good condition and free from damage. 7. **Reinstalling the Bearing**: Place the bearing back into the housing and secure it properly. 8. **Checking the Roll Neck**: Inspect the roll neck for any wear or damage. 9. **Final Installation**: Reinstall the bearing housing onto the roll. **Lubrication of Roll Neck Bearings** Proper lubrication is crucial for maintaining bearing performance. The recommended grease should have the following characteristics: - **Base Oil**: Solvent-based mineral oil or synthetic base oil with a viscosity of 320–460 cSt. - **Viscosity Index**: Minimum of 80. - **Pour Point**: -10°C. - **Thickener Type**: Lithium complex, calcium sulfonate, composite aluminum, or equivalent. - **Consistency**: NLGI No. 1 or 2. - **Additives**: Anti-oxidants, preservatives, and EP additives (ASTM D2509). **Recommended Greases**: - Timken Premium Mill Grease - Mobil Mobilith SHC 460 - Fina Ceran HV **Grease Amount and Refilling**: - Fill the bearing and housing to about one-third to two-thirds of the space. Avoid over-lubrication. - After each grinding cycle, refill with 1/5 of the initial amount. - The refilling interval depends on factors like bearing layout, speed, temperature, and environment. Always maintain clean and fresh grease inside the bearing. **Installation Tips**: - Do not wash off the anti-rust grease on new bearings; it is safe to leave it in place during installation. **Storage and Handling**: - Keep inner and outer rings wrapped in plastic to protect against moisture and dust. - Store bearings horizontally in their original packaging to prevent deformation. - Avoid exposing bearings to dusty or humid environments unless they are in sealed containers. - Maintain a clean and organized workspace when installing bearings. Avoid areas near welding or machining equipment to prevent contamination. This article is part of the TIMKEN® bearing knowledge series.
