In summer, high temperatures can significantly impact the normal growth and development of crops, leading to heat stress and damage. To mitigate these effects, several effective measures should be taken: 1. **Cooling through irrigation**: During hot periods, timely watering helps improve the microclimate in the field and lowers the temperature by about 1°C to 3°C. This reduces the direct harm caused by high temperatures to flowers and photosynthetic organs. Spraying cool water directly on crop stems and leaves using a sprinkler or sprayer also provides a cooling effect, typically lowering the temperature by around 1°C. 2. **Artificial pollination assistance**: In dry and high-temperature conditions, natural pollination for crops like corn and sorghum may become less effective. Artificial pollination can help reduce the negative impact of heat on the pollination and fertilization process, increasing the fruit-setting rate by 5% to 8% compared to natural pollination. 3. **Foliar application of nutrients**: During the hot season, continuous foliar spraying with solutions such as urea, human urine, pig or cow manure, potassium dihydrogen phosphate, superphosphate, or grass ash leachings can both cool and humidify the plants while supplying essential nutrients. However, it's important to adjust the concentration appropriately to avoid overloading the plants. 4. **Enhanced management practices**: Proper management of fertilizers and water during hot weather improves plant nutrition and enhances their ability to withstand high temperatures. For example, sweet peppers treated with a 30 ppm solution of p-chlorophenoxyacetic acid can reduce flower drop caused by heat. Tomatoes sprayed with 2000–3000 ppm B9 solution, 0.1% zinc sulfate, or copper sulfate solution can improve heat resistance, reduce fruit cracking, and prevent sunburn. Applying 2.4-D to flowers or smearing it on them can help prevent high-temperature-induced flower drop and promote ovary growth. In plastic greenhouses, covering with shade nets during summer can lower temperatures by 4°C to 6°C, protecting crops from rain, hail, and pests.
