The University’s Center for Education has made substantial investments in developing this emerging industry, with one of its key partners being MKE, a Taiwanese company that received an investment of NT$20 million. MKE has been actively involved in research and development, and the establishment of a clean room at the Yucheng Center has been ongoing for over two years. Several DSSC-based products are now commercially available, marking a major step forward in the field. DSSCs offer superior performance under low-light conditions compared to traditional solar cells, making them ideal for indoor or dimly lit environments. As a type of chemical battery, they also provide an aesthetically pleasing design, which opens up opportunities for integration into 3C devices and other consumer electronics. Major DSSC manufacturers in China include Formosa Plastics, Yongguang, Changxing, Shuo, Fu Ying, and others. These technologies are being used in environmental sensors, energy harvesting systems (EHM), commercial power panel chargers (CellBox), and even in electronic tags (E-Tag). In addition to focusing on micro-process design and high-voltage module development, MKE is also working on battery structure optimization, packaging techniques, and thin-line design. The company emphasizes enhancing product features through real-world applications, and it has gained recognition both domestically and internationally. Collaborations with leading institutions such as Central University, ITRI, and the Chinese Academy of Sciences have further strengthened its position in the global DSSC market. Companies like Dachang Dyesol and G24i have also shown interest in partnering with MKE. MKE received government support from the Taipei Industrial Development Bureau in 2012, despite being a relatively new company. This financial backing helped accelerate its growth and innovation. Currently, MKE is capable of producing DSSC panels up to 300mm x 300mm in size, demonstrating its technical capabilities and potential for future expansion. With continued R&D efforts and strategic partnerships, MKE is well-positioned to play a key role in the evolving solar energy landscape.
