A ballast is an essential component in lighting systems, especially for fluorescent lamps. Modern electronic ballasts operate by first converting the incoming 220V AC into DC. After filtering the DC, the circuit uses an OTL oscillator made up of two triodes to convert this DC into a high-frequency alternating current. This high-frequency signal is then stepped up using a transformer, producing voltages that can reach over 1000 volts peak. This high-voltage AC is then delivered to the lamp, causing it to light up efficiently.

When connecting an electronic ballast, there are three key technical parameters to consider: power factor, lamp current crest factor, and harmonic content. These factors determine the performance and reliability of the ballast. Some ballasts struggle to meet all three simultaneously, but advanced models like those using the HD9712 module can achieve all three indicators and meet higher industry standards.

As technology advances, the design of fluorescent ballasts has evolved toward integration and modularity. This makes the circuits simpler, more reliable, and safer. Instead of complex and potentially unstable setups, modern ballasts offer cleaner and more efficient solutions for lighting applications.

For a four-wire ballast, there are four terminals—two for the main coil and two for the auxiliary coil. The main coil is connected in series with the lamp and the power supply, similar to a two-wire ballast. The auxiliary coil is connected between the starter and the lamp, aiding in the ignition process. It’s important to distinguish between the main and auxiliary coils, as they have different resistance values. A multimeter can be used to measure this, with the main coil showing higher resistance and the auxiliary coil lower. If connected incorrectly, the lamp or ballast could be damaged. Always check the wiring diagram before installation to avoid mistakes.
