Gem Flower Planting and Management Method: Spring and autumn are the best seasons for growing gem flowers, as they require ample sunlight. If plants don't get enough light, they may become leggy, with weak growth, thin leaves, dull color, and reduced white powder on the foliage. Watering should follow the principle of "don’t let it dry out completely, but don’t overwater either." Ensure that water drains properly from the pot to avoid root rot. When the air is dry, you can mist around the plants, but avoid letting water collect in the leaf centers, as this can cause a rotten heart. Be cautious of prolonged rainy periods, as they can also harm the plant. During the growing season, apply a diluted liquid fertilizer or a balanced compound fertilizer with low nitrogen, high phosphorus, and high potassium every 20 days. Avoid getting fertilizer on the leaves, as this can burn them. It's best to fertilize in the morning or late afternoon, and then water the soil in the evening or the next morning to flush out any excess fertilizer. In winter, place the plant in a sunny spot. If nighttime temperatures stay around 10°C and there’s a slight temperature difference between day and night, you can water and fertilize lightly to keep the plant active. However, if it’s too cold, reduce watering, keep the soil dry, stop fertilizing, and allow the plant to go dormant. Gem flowers can tolerate temperatures as low as 5°C, and some varieties can even survive at 0°C. Repot every 1 to 2 years, ideally in spring or autumn. The soil should be loose, well-draining, and rich in nutrients. A good mix includes 3 parts of humus soil, 3 parts of river sand, 1 part of garden soil, and 1 part of crushed slag, along with a small amount of calcium-rich material like bone meal. When repotting, trim any rotten roots and cut back older roots to encourage new, healthy root growth. You can also add a layer of stones or gravel on top of the soil to enhance the visual appeal, prevent water splashing onto the leaves, and protect the plant’s appearance. For mature gem flowers aged 2-3 years or more, consider propagating new seedlings to replace the aging ones and maintain vibrant growth.
