The late management of loofah is a good way to keep the seeds and melons

Vegetable farmers often collect loofah seeds during the later stage of the plant's growth. Typically, once the plants start producing seeds, their ability to produce loofahs declines. However, it takes about 80 to 90 days for the loofah to mature and produce seeds. Cultivating seeds in the last three months can negatively affect the overall yield and profitability of loofah farming. By managing the plants during the late stage of production, farmers can maintain a steady output of loofah while still collecting quality seeds.

1. When the loofah enters its planned seeding period, it’s important to reserve a side vine just below the first or second node on the main vine. This allows the side vine to take over and continue producing fruit, ensuring continuous growth without interruption.

2. At least 5 to 6 leaves should be left above the melons on the main vines. This ensures that the developing seeds receive enough nutrients for healthy growth.

3. Side vines should be trained promptly. It’s not advisable to leave too many fruits on the side vines for more than 15 days after the main vines are pruned, as this may cause competition and hinder seed development. The main melon strips typically finish within 15 days, entering the seed maturation phase. Leaving fruits on side vines for too long may result in small seedlings or slow growth. Therefore, it's best to remove them early. The leaves on the side vines can also provide significant nutrition to support the growth of the seed-bearing fruits, helping to increase both the quantity and quality of the seeds produced.

4. During the early growth stage of the side vine, the concentration of anther solution should be low. A recommended formula includes: adding 10 ml of quercetin, 6 ml of 2,4-D , 10 ml of naphthaleneacetic acid, 10 ml of flower buds, 12 ml of loofah extract, 20 ml of green source, and 1 gram of rotten spirit and fruit in 2 kg of water. Adding the spirit first helps reduce nutrient competition and prevents hormone toxicity, which could cause premature aging. After about 80 to 90 days, when the melons are harvested, you can increase the concentration slightly by adding 2,4-D to 8 ml, followed by 10 ml of fruit extract.

5. Although loofah plants have strong root systems, they tend to decline in productivity once they enter the seeding phase. To ensure continued fruiting and seed development, it's important to increase fertilization. Top dressing can be done through soil application or foliar sprays. Combining biological fertilizers with high-potassium fertilizers helps promote root growth, strengthen the plant, and maintain flower and fruit development. Apply 20~25 kg of biological bacterial fertilizer per acre, and 15~20 kg of high-potassium fertilizer per acre. Alternatively, potassium sulfate compound fertilizer can be used at 25~30 kg per acre. Foliar sprays are especially useful for supplementing nutrients that the roots might not absorb efficiently, meeting the high nutritional demands of the plants and seedlings. Use a full-nutrient foliar fertilizer for optimal results.
