A major bus accident occurred on the A9 highway in Aude, France, on the evening of August 11th, local time. According to reports from AFP and the European Times, a large passenger coach overturned, resulting in two fatalities and over 30 injuries. The incident was caused by a passenger attempting to seize the driver's steering wheel, leading to a loss of control.
The bus, operated by Eurolines, was traveling from Marseille to Murcia, Spain. It made a stop at Fito around 1:30 am, between Narbonne and Perpignan, when the accident occurred. The vehicle veered off the road, struck the guardrail, and rolled onto the shoulder before overturning.
Prosecutor Bernard Shalmaz confirmed that the Spanish driver initially reported the incident to the gendarmerie, stating that a passenger had forcefully taken the steering wheel. Subsequently, the passenger admitted to trying to steal the driver’s control, which led to the crash.
Authorities confirmed that two people lost their lives in the accident—both were reportedly in their 50s. A 55-year-old Spaniard and a 54-year-old Frenchman were among the deceased. Over 30 others were injured, with two suffering serious injuries. Fortunately, all the injured were taken to nearby hospitals and are not in life-threatening condition.
Uninjured passengers were transported to a multi-functional reception center in Fito, where they received psychological support to cope with the trauma of the event.
This tragic incident comes amid a series of road accidents in France over the weekend of August 10th and 11th, which resulted in a total of 10 deaths. Two of these accidents occurred in the Aude region, while the third took place near Lorient in Brittany. In that case, a car with an Evelyn license plate was involved in a high-speed collision that led to a fire, killing three people inside the vehicle.
