In order to improve the yield of chestnut trees, it's essential to address the issue of open space, which is primarily caused by poor pollination and fertilization. A significant contributing factor to this problem is the deficiency of trace elements such as boron, zinc, and molybdenum. These nutrients play a crucial role in pollen development and viability. When chestnut trees lack these elements, they often produce less pollen, which may be deformed or weak, ultimately affecting the pollination process. To tackle this issue effectively, it's important to replenish these essential nutrients during the summer and autumn seasons. This allows the tree to store sufficient amounts of boron, zinc, and molybdenum in its branches before the leaves fall. As a result, when the next growing season begins, the tree will have enough resources to support healthy flowering and successful pollination, reducing the occurrence of open spaces. Here are some practical steps to achieve this: During the summer and autumn, combine pre-harvest and post-harvest fertilization with the addition of borax and zinc sulfate. For each tree that is five years old or older, apply approximately 0.25 to 0.50 kg of borax and 0.15 to 0.25 kg of zinc sulfate per tree. Mix these ingredients thoroughly with other fertilizers and dig shallow trenches under the canopy, then cover the soil. Additionally, during the growth period of summer shoots and autumn shoots, spray a mixture of 0.1% borax, 0.1% zinc sulfate, and 0.1% ammonium molybdate every 10 to 15 days. Alongside this, you can also use 600 times diluted amino acid compound micro-fertilizer, 0.2% urea, 0.3% potassium dihydrogen phosphate, and 0.1% magnesium solution. This helps enhance the absorption of boron, zinc, and molybdenum by the leaves. Apply the solution until the foliage is uniformly wet, with droplets beginning to drip. This method ensures that the tree receives adequate trace elements through foliar application. By following these practices, you can significantly improve the health of your chestnut trees and increase their yield. (Source: Agricultural Resources Guide - Huang Jiannan)
