Using materials like expanding foam, caulk, or steel wool can effectively block these entry points. I’ve seen firsthand how important this step is. When I first moved into my house, I had a rat problem. After a thorough inspection, we discovered a hole between the garage and the kitchen. We sealed it with steel wool and then caulked it thoroughly. This not only helped eliminate the rodent issue but also reduced the risk of termite and ant infestations.

2. Install window and door screens. 3. Keep trash and yard waste away from your home. Although it might be convenient to have bins or storage areas right outside your front door, these can become magnets for pests such as mice, rats, and termites. It’s best to store garbage cans and yard debris at least 10 feet away from your house. Opt for plastic containers instead of metal ones, as they are less attractive to pests and easier to clean.

4. Eliminate standing water. Water sources are not only a breeding ground for flies but can also attract mice and other pests looking for moisture. Make sure to fix any leaks, cover rain barrels, and fill in low-lying areas with cement or gravel. Inside your home, ensure that sinks, drains, and gutters are properly maintained to prevent water accumulation. By reducing excess moisture, you’re making your home less appealing to unwanted visitors.
