After the potato seedlings have emerged, the surrounding weeds become very vigorous. If the herbicides used are not effective, they may harm the potato plants without properly controlling the weeds. This has led to many concerns about how to choose the right herbicides that are both safe for the crop and effective against weeds. According to China Agricultural Resources Network, several herbicides are commonly used for potato seedling control.
Currently, the most widely used herbicides for potato seedlings include sulfuron-sulfuron, but single-ingredient products like oxazinone tend to be less effective. To improve performance, some formulations have been developed by combining different active ingredients. For example, sulfensulfuron-methyl, citricin, and oxazinone combinations have shown better results and are less affected by the growth stage of the potato plants.
Two commonly used herbicides for potato seedlings are:
1. **Gore** – This is a selective contact herbicide that works as a soil treatment before weed emergence and also targets the stems and leaves after the weeds appear. It is recommended to use 40–50 ml of 24% Gore emulsifiable concentrate in 60 kg of water, applied evenly. It effectively controls annual weeds such as barnyard grass, goosegrass, foxtail, bluegrass, purslane, iron leek, and alfalfa, but it is not very effective on perennial weeds. When using Gore, it's important to conduct small-scale tests first in different climatic zones to determine the best application method and dosage. Also, since it is a contact herbicide, it should be sprayed thoroughly and evenly, avoiding any disruption of the chemical film after application. Accurate dosing is crucial for optimal results.
2. **Saikejin** – A systemic herbicide that acts as a selective soil treatment. It is typically applied at a rate of 25–65 g of 70% wettable powder per 40–50 kg of water. It controls various broadleaf weeds and some grassy weeds, including pigweed, knotweed, purslane, bitter leeks, sorghum, cocklebur, valerian, and foxtail. However, care must be taken as heavy rainfall or flooding after application can lead to phytotoxic effects on the potato plants.
While chemical herbicides are widely used, manual weeding remains the most effective and environmentally friendly option if labor is available. Choosing the right herbicide depends on local conditions, weed types, and crop growth stages. Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions carefully to ensure safety and effectiveness.
