In the smart greenhouse, vegetables thrive in a controlled environment. Huang Shuicai, the manager of the base, still remembers last winter when an extreme cold snap caused significant damage. Over 50 acres of vegetables were destroyed, with nearly 60% of the crop lost due to frost, resulting in economic losses of around 300,000 yuan.
Jianning County experiences four distinct seasons, with large temperature fluctuations between day and night during winter. While this climate helps fruits and vegetables grow well, it also makes them vulnerable to freezing. In the past, farmers used coal stoves to heat the greenhouses at night, but they had to ventilate frequently to avoid gas poisoning.
After careful consideration, Huang Shuicai and his partners decided to invest in automatic temperature control systems. They partnered with a company from Shandong and introduced smart heating lamps that can be programmed to turn on automatically when temperatures drop below a set point, and shut off when the desired level is reached.
The Jianning Power Supply Company, which works closely with the vegetable base, provided a free transformer to ensure the smooth operation of the new equipment. Today, the temperature control devices are already ordered and awaiting installation. "With this system, we no longer have to worry about the cold," Huang said. "This year, we’ve planned the vegetable varieties for the Spring Festival, and I believe these greenhouses will protect our crops even if another freeze hits."
Meanwhile, in the Huanghua pear orchards, Fu Xing’an, the manager of Lvyuan Fruit Industry, emphasized the importance of precision fertilization. With over 100,000 mu of land dedicated to Huanghua pears and an annual output of more than 80,000 tons, the quality of their fruit is highly regarded.
Fu took us to see the farm, where a biogas digester was in operation. The biogas slurry was pumped up the hill and distributed through pipes to each tree. The Green Source Fruit Planting Base, covering 1,200 mu, uses organic fertilizers like animal manure and biogas residue instead of chemical ones.
Previously, fertilization relied on experience, but now, with the help of the Fujian Academy of Agricultural Sciences, they conduct precise soil testing to determine exactly what nutrients the trees need. Workers now use a pressure pump to deliver the right amount of nutrients directly to each tree.
To support this process, Fu built an electric pump station with assistance from the Jianning Power Supply Company. This system pumps biogas slurry to the top of the hill and distributes it efficiently. Currently, 100 acres of orchard have been equipped with this technology, with more areas being upgraded.
Jianning County, located at the source of the Minjiang River, boasts ideal conditions for agriculture. With its rich ecology and natural resources, the county is developing a million-acre smart agricultural park focused on intelligent management, smart production, and sustainable living. The project has already passed expert reviews.
Liu Bo, president of the Fujian Academy of Agricultural Sciences, explained that the park will include national and provincial test bases, breeding centers, and demonstration sites for precision agriculture. The goal is to create a model for modern, tech-driven farming.
