Walking into the greenhouse vegetable base in Xikou Town, Jianning County, Sanming City, Fujian Province, we were immediately greeted by a vibrant atmosphere filled with greenery. Not far away, newly installed transformers stood in the fields, providing essential electricity to support the temperature control systems in the greenhouses.
This is just one example of the Jianning County Smart Agricultural Demonstration Park, where the Jianning Power Supply Company has played a key role in ensuring reliable power supply. Their efforts have earned high praise from local farmers and agricultural enterprises.
In the smart greenhouse, vegetables thrive in a controlled environment. Huang Shuicai, who manages the base, recalls the harsh winter last year when extreme cold caused significant damage. Around 50 acres of vegetables were destroyed—60% of the total planting area—leading to losses of nearly 300,000 yuan.
Jianning experiences four distinct seasons, with large temperature fluctuations between day and night in winter. While this climate helps crops grow, it also makes them vulnerable to frost. In the past, farmers used coal stoves to warm the greenhouses at night, but had to ventilate frequently to avoid poisoning the plants.
After careful consideration, Huang decided to invest in automatic temperature control systems. He partnered with a company in Shandong to introduce intelligent heating equipment. Each greenhouse now has heating lamps that automatically turn on when temperatures drop below a set threshold and shut off once the desired level is reached.
The Jianning Power Supply Company, which works closely with the vegetable base, provided a transformer free of charge to ensure the smooth operation of the new equipment. Today, the temperature control devices are already ordered and awaiting installation. "With these systems, we no longer need to worry about cold weather," Huang said. This year, the shareholders have planned special vegetable varieties for the Spring Festival, confident that the constant temperature rooms will protect the crops from freezing.
Moving to the Huanghua pear orchards, the area spans over 100,000 mu, producing more than 80,000 tons annually. The pears from Lvyuan Fruit Industry are known for their superior quality. Fu Xing'an, the project manager, credits this to precision fertilization.
Fu led us through the orchard, where a farm and biogas digester were located. Biogas slurry was pumped uphill and distributed via pipes to each fruit tree. The Green Source Fruit Planting Base covers 1,200 mu, and instead of chemical fertilizers, they use animal manure, biogas residue, and green manure.
With guidance from the Fujian Academy of Agricultural Sciences, Fu now practices precise fertilization. "Previously, we relied on experience, not knowing exactly what the trees needed," he explained. Now, soil testing determines nutrient deficiencies, allowing for accurate fertilization.
At present, every tree receives precisely measured nutrients through a pressure pump system. Workers simply transfer the right amount of nutrients to each tree. To support this process, Fu built an electric pump station with help from the Jianning Power Supply Company. Electric pumps lift the biogas slurry to the top of the hill, then distribute it through pressurized pipes.
So far, 100 acres of fruit trees have been equipped with this system, with more areas being gradually upgraded.
Looking ahead, Jianning County, situated at the source of the Minjiang River, is leveraging its favorable geography, climate, and soil conditions to develop characteristic agriculture. The county plans to build a million-acre smart agricultural park focused on intelligent management, smart production, and smart living. The project has already passed expert review.
Liu Bo, president of the Fujian Academy of Agricultural Sciences, emphasized that the smart agricultural park will include national and provincial test bases, experimental stations, and breeding centers. It aims to become a model for precise and intelligent agriculture.
To support the development, the Jianning Power Supply Company has proactively participated in power planning. They have visited sites, listened to customer feedback, and offered full support. Currently, they are working with several key agricultural enterprises within the park, including greenhouse vegetable bases, Luyuan Fruit Industry, Huanghuacai Base, and Dachuan Biotechnology, to address power needs.
This collaboration is helping transform Jianning into a hub of smart and sustainable agriculture, setting a new standard for rural development.
