In recent years, China has made significant progress in implementing "pollution-free" tea production methods. This includes the promotion of integrated pest management techniques, which have significantly reduced the reliance on chemical pesticides. Certain harmful chemicals, such as 666, have been banned from use in tea farming due to their long-term environmental and health risks. Instead, the focus has shifted toward using low-toxicity, high-efficiency, and environmentally friendly alternatives—such as plant-based and microbial pesticides. These biological options are not only safer for human and animal health but also break down quickly in the environment, leaving minimal residue behind.
Biological pesticides, including microbial and botanical formulations, are ideal for producing green and organic teas. They align well with the principles of sustainable agriculture and are particularly recommended for high-grade green food teas, including organic and AA-grade varieties. Among the most commonly used biological pesticides in tea cultivation are Matrine and Rotenone.
Matrine, also known as oxymatrine, is an alkaloid extracted from the roots and fruits of Sophora flavescens using organic solvents like ethanol. It degrades rapidly in the environment and leaves almost no residue. It is effective against pests such as the tea black moth and tea caterpillar during their early larval stages or egg hatching periods. A 0.2% aqueous solution of Matrine is typically applied at a rate of 50–75 mL per 667 square meters, diluted with 50–75 liters of water and sprayed at a ratio of 1000–1500 times. It can also be used in organic tea gardens to control tea mites, with a 3.2% emulsifiable concentrate applied before the third instar stage.
Rotenone, also known as Saito, is a naturally derived insecticide that has been used for centuries. It breaks down quickly in air and soil, making it a safe option with low residual toxicity. It has contact and stomach action against a wide range of pests, including tea mites, tea caterpillars, and leaf moths. Its effectiveness lasts about 5–6 days, depending on weather conditions. For application, 2.5% emulsifiable concentrate of Rotenone is recommended at a rate of 150–250 mL per 667 square meters, diluted with 300–500 times the volume of water and sprayed accordingly.
The China Pesticide Network reminds farmers that Rotenone should not be mixed with alkaline pesticides and must be used carefully to avoid contaminating fish ponds, as it is highly toxic to aquatic life.
