The National Grid Quality Inspection Center has been actively enhancing its capabilities in testing and researching wind power bolts to better support the growth of this critical industry. Over the past few years, the center has invested in advanced equipment such as a 600-ton microcomputer-controlled electro-hydraulic servo horizontal tensile testing machine, which allows for high-precision and large-range measurements. This state-of-the-art facility enables the inspection of wind power bolts up to 7 meters in length, making it the top testing center in China. In addition to regular testing, the center has also focused on research and development, with notable achievements like the "Research on the Core Technology of High-Strength Bolts for Wind Power" project, which was approved by the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine in December 2011.
This research involved material selection, performance testing, and process optimization, leading to the development of high-strength bolts with tensile strength reaching 1060MPa and elongation of 17%, surpassing current national standards. The results have been successfully applied in production, helping companies like Xuzhou Ruida Bolt Fastener Factory to develop new high-plasticity, high-strength bolts that meet strict mechanical requirements and are now widely used in high-end structures such as gas carriers, significantly boosting their market competitiveness.
Recently, the center has conducted in-depth testing on high-strength bolts, large hex nuts, and washers for several leading companies, including Beijing Jingcheng New Energy Co., Ltd. and Guodian United Power Technology Co., Ltd. Key tests include strength, hardness, torque coefficient, and surface decarburization layer analysis. These assessments ensure that bolts meet the rigorous demands of large-scale (≥ M39) and high-strength (≥10.9) applications, guaranteeing mechanical properties, fatigue resistance, and overall performance to meet engineering standards.
As China continues to expand its renewable energy infrastructure, wind power has become a vital clean energy source. With over 70 major wind turbine manufacturers in the country, the demand for high-performance bolts is increasing. Wind turbines operate in extreme conditions, facing cold, heat, and temperature fluctuations, often in remote locations that are difficult to access. Therefore, wind power bolts must be durable, with a service life of at least 10 years and excellent low-temperature toughness. These stringent requirements highlight the importance of reliable and high-quality fasteners in ensuring the stability and efficiency of wind power systems.
