Tian Yu, a retired Chinese man living in New York under a pseudonym, has developed an innovative air scrubber and secured a patent from the State Intellectual Property Office of China. His invention is unique in that it allows individuals to use common household items like water and spices as a medium to purify the air from harmful pollutants found in smog. Now 81 years old, Tian Yu resides in a beachfront retirement community in Los Angeles. He lives comfortably on social security benefits and enjoys a peaceful life in his golden years. Despite limited resources and basic working conditions, he managed to create his invention using simple tools. He purchased a sealed glass container, plastic tubes, and even bought laundry detergent in plastic barrels from an Asian supermarket to conduct his experiments. “The Chinese character for 'haze' has been used for thousands of years. It originally described dust carried by strong winds, making the air appear dull,†Tian Yu explained. “Today’s haze is more than just visibility issues—it contains dangerous toxins like carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, hydrocarbons, and sulfur dioxide.†He added, “Just relying on these toxins isn’t enough to solve the problem.†To address this challenge, Tian Yu designed the air scrubber. The device works by filtering out dust and toxins from the air before it reaches the user. “You can add salt, baking soda, vinegar, or alcohol to the water depending on the type of pollutants in the air,†he said. This helps neutralize or wash away harmful substances effectively. The air scrubber consists of two parts. One is portable, resembling a gas mask but much lighter and easier to breathe through. Unlike military-grade masks, it doesn’t cause discomfort or difficulty in breathing. Additionally, the cost of Tian Yu’s invention is significantly lower than traditional gas masks. The second part of the system functions as an indoor air purifier. It uses a small motor to power the air-washing process. Tian Yu estimates the total production cost of his entire project to be around 150 RMB. Despite its low cost, the device is efficient and practical for everyday use.
