In the grand exhibition of large-scale mechanical and steel equipment, where heavy machinery dominates the scene, a small dust-proof mask stood out as an eye-catching detail. At the opening of the 13th (2014) Taiyuan Coal Industry Technology and Equipment Exhibition, the presence of dust masks was both surprising and logical. This year’s event, known for its strong sense of modernity, has seen a shift in focus over the years—from massive hydraulic supports and mining machines in the early days to safety equipment like underground monitoring systems and rescue cabins in recent years. Last year, control systems took center stage, showcasing the technological progress in the coal industry. Now, dust masks have made their way into the spotlight, not only as a response to rising air pollution concerns but also as a symbol of growing attention to workers' health and safety.
On the morning of the exhibition, at the China (Taiyuan) Coal Trading Center, a booth dedicated to dust masks drew considerable interest from visitors. The masks came in various shapes—oval, triangular—and were made from different materials, some rigid, others softer. Some featured exhalation valves to make breathing easier. According to reports, these masks do not use gauze and can filter particles as small as 0.3 microns, far more effective than standard PM2.5 masks that only capture particles around 2.5 microns. Prices ranged from a few dollars to tens, making them accessible and practical. After attending the exhibition for many years, the reporter finally encountered an affordable and useful product. When trying to purchase one, they were told only samples remained—proof of high demand.
Several exhibitors showcased dust masks at the event. One company presented the national standards for dust masks in China, along with their competitive pricing, which attracted many visitors. Why are these small masks making an appearance? According to the exhibitors, underground workers face a high risk of pneumoconiosis, and dust masks serve as their final line of defense. Moreover, these masks can be used across various industries, and even ordinary residents can benefit from them. The market potential is vast.
The three-day exhibition, organized by the Provincial Coal Industry Association, brought together 226 exhibitors from both domestic and international markets. Last year, the coal industry in the province saw a significant drop in mortality rates, reaching 0.077 per million tons—a 15.38% decrease compared to the previous year. Each year, the coal exhibition reflects new advancements in the industry, highlighting ongoing improvements and innovations.
