In the midst of large-scale mechanical and steel equipment displays, a small dust-proof mask stood out as a striking contrast. At the opening of the 13th (2014) Taiyuan Coal Industry Technology and Equipment Exhibition, these masks made an unexpected yet logical appearance. It was a surprising but meaningful addition to an event that has long showcased the evolution of coal industry technology. The annual Taiyuan Coal Industry Technical Equipment Exhibition reflects the changing times. In the past, when the coal industry in the province was booming, massive hydraulic supports, mining machines, and conveyor belts were the stars of the show. As safety became a growing concern, monitoring systems and rescue capsules took center stage. Last year, various control systems became the highlight, showcasing technological progress. This year, the introduction of dust masks not only shows a keen business response to air pollution but also highlights the humanistic care for workers. At the China (Taiyuan) Coal Trading Center exhibition hall, a booth displaying masks drew significant attention. Visitors observed a variety of designs—oval, triangular, with different materials, some rigid, others soft. Some featured exhalation valves to make breathing easier. According to reports, these masks do not use gauze and can filter particles as small as 0.3 microns, far surpassing standard PM2.5 masks that only filter up to 2.5 microns. Prices range from just a few dollars to tens, making them accessible and practical. After years of attending the exhibition, the reporter finally found a product that was both affordable and useful. When he prepared to purchase one, he was told only samples remained—proof of its popularity. More than one exhibitor showcased dust masks at the event. One company presented the national standards for dust masks in China, along with their cost advantages, attracting many visitors. Why were these small masks on display? According to the exhibitors, underground workers suffer from high rates of pneumoconiosis, and dust masks serve as their last line of defense. Additionally, they are applicable across various industries and even suitable for everyday use. The market potential is vast. The three-day exhibition, organized by the Provincial Coal Industry Association, attracted 226 exhibitors from around the world. Last year, the coal industry's mortality rate dropped to 0.077 per million tons—a 15.38% decrease from the previous year. Each year’s exhibition reveals new progress in the province’s coal industry.
