With the continuous improvement of living standards and housing conditions, the kitchen and bathroom industry is witnessing a steady evolution in product functionality and user experience. Over recent years, these products have become more household-oriented, aligning closely with the needs of modern families. Consumers are increasingly drawn to innovative and aesthetically appealing options such as near-suction range hoods, European-style range hoods, built-in sterilizers, and integrated gas stoves, which have seen notable growth.
At the 2013 China Kitchen Industry Development Forum in Shanghai, Peng Yi, Deputy General Manager of Zhong Yikang, highlighted that the kitchen and bathroom sector is expected to maintain a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 10% over the next five years. This positive outlook comes after a period of fluctuation, including a 4.8% decline in 2012 due to factors like reduced financial incentives and real estate regulations. However, the market rebounded strongly in the first three quarters of 2013, with a 17.6% increase, pushing the total market size beyond 1 trillion yuan.
The strong recovery was driven by several factors, including the rebound in the second-hand housing market, energy-saving subsidies, and overall economic improvements. Looking ahead, the industry's growth will be influenced by real estate activity, macroeconomic trends, and government policies such as the "Appliances to the Countryside" initiative and energy-saving subsidies.
Urbanization in China has exceeded 50%, yet it still accounts for only about 35% of the population, far below developed countries. As urbanization continues, consumer lifestyles are shifting, driving demand for kitchen and bathroom products. Additionally, the current ownership rate of these products in Chinese households remains relatively low, but this is expected to change as incomes rise and manufacturers continue to innovate.
The expansion of e-commerce has also played a significant role. According to Zhong Yikang’s data, sales of kitchen and bathroom products increased by 17.6% year-on-year in the first three quarters of the year, with online channels growing at an impressive 185.7%—over 20 times faster than offline sales. This trend underscores the growing importance of digital platforms in the home appliance market.
Peng Yi is confident about the future of the kitchen and bathroom industry, predicting a CAGR of around 10% over the next five years, outpacing the overall home appliance market by 4–5 percentage points. By 2016, the industry is expected to reach 199.5 billion yuan. Future products will likely be more intelligent, energy-efficient, and system-based, with e-commerce playing a central role in distribution. Zhong Yikang forecasts that online home appliance sales will hit 400 billion yuan by 2016, with kitchen and bathroom products alone surpassing 16.8 billion yuan in online sales in 2014.
