When experts gather to discuss plastics, the conversation rarely centers on the problem itself. But for one day in New York, that could change. The Plastics Forum, a one-day event dedicated to exploring the future of plastics, will take place on June 24 in Tribeca. It will focus on innovative designs, new materials, and sustainable solutions aimed at transforming plastic from a waste product into a valuable resource.
The third annual Plastics Forum made its U.S. debut in 2014, following its first launch at the Rio+20 Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro in 2012. Before that, it was held in Hong Kong in June 2013, in partnership with the Asian Association. Organized by the Ocean Recovery Alliance and the Republic of the Republic project, the forum brings together industry leaders to promote emerging solutions that are making their way into the market. It also highlights sustainable practices and business opportunities that turn waste plastics into useful products.
This year’s event will feature the latest reports analyzing the world’s largest companies and how they use plastics as a resource. One such report, *Cherish Plastics: Business Case, Measurement, Management, and Disclosure*, was developed by the Plastics Disclosure Project in collaboration with the United Nations Environment Programme and Trucost, a London-based research firm led by Richard Mathisen.
“Natural capital valuations help organizations understand their environmental impact, including the damage caused by ocean pollution,†said Matisse. “By assigning a financial value to issues like plastic waste, companies can better integrate environmental management into their core operations. Highlighting reuse, recycling, and innovation helps build a proactive and sustainable business model.â€
The forum will host speakers from across the plastics industry, including Dale S. Scott O’Connell, Vice President of Environmental Affairs at the U.S. Chemistry Council, and keynote speaker Steve Russell, who will explore the potential of non-virgin plastics. Other topics include using living fungi to convert agricultural waste into protective packaging and foam insulation.
Whether you're an industry professional, a researcher, or simply someone passionate about sustainability, the Plastics Forum offers a unique opportunity to learn, connect, and contribute to a more circular economy. Join us in Tribeca on June 24 to be part of the conversation shaping the future of plastics.
