When experts gather to discuss plastics, the conversation is often focused on its challenges rather than solutions. But for one day in New York, the dialogue will shift toward possibilities. The Plastics Forum, a one-day event dedicated to exploring the future of plastics, innovative materials, and sustainable design, will take place on June 24 in Tribeca. The goal is to rethink how plastics can be used more effectively, reducing their impact as waste. The third annual Plastics Forum made its U.S. debut in 2014, following earlier editions in Rio de Janeiro during the Rio+20 Earth Summit in 2012 and in Hong Kong in 2013. Organized by the Ocean Recovery Alliance and the Republic of the Republic project, the forum brings together industry leaders, scientists, and policymakers to showcase cutting-edge solutions that transform plastic waste into valuable resources. This year’s event will feature new reports analyzing the plastic usage of major global companies. One such report, *Cherish Plastics: Business Case, Measurement, Management, and Disclosure*, was developed by the Plastics Disclosure Project in collaboration with the United Nations Environment Programme and Trucost, a London-based research firm led by Richard Mathisen. These insights aim to help businesses better understand and manage their plastic footprint. “Natural capital valuations allow organizations to assess their environmental impact, including the damage caused by ocean pollution,” said Matisse. “By assigning a financial value to plastic waste, companies can integrate sustainability into their core business strategies. Highlighting reuse, recycling, and innovation creates a proactive and sustainable business model.” The forum will host speakers from across the plastics industry, including Dale R. Smith, Vice President of Environmental Affairs at the U.S. Chemistry Council, and keynote speaker Steve Russell, who will discuss the potential of non-virgin plastics. Other presentations will explore groundbreaking ideas like using fungi to turn agricultural waste into biodegradable packaging and insulation materials. As the world grapples with plastic pollution, events like the Plastics Forum offer a vital platform for innovation, collaboration, and real-world solutions. By bringing together diverse voices, the forum aims to inspire change and drive progress toward a more sustainable future.
