Abstract Green manufacturing is fundamentally about the efficient use of energy and the development of sustainable energy sources. Superhard materials and tools play a critical role in industrial processing, as their performance significantly influences the creation of green GDP. These materials offer high processing efficiency, superior quality, and low environmental impact, making them essential for reducing industrial energy consumption. Cutting tools are widely used across various industries, and as machining technologies advance, there is an increasing demand for tools that support eco-friendly and sustainable production. In addition to extending tool life, modern cutting tools must also minimize contamination during the cutting process. Dry cutting is preferred whenever possible, and when cutting fluids are necessary, they should contain only rust inhibitors without organic compounds to reduce recycling costs. The diversity of cutting tools and their varying working conditions determine the choice of coating. Unlike turning or drilling, milling cutters must account for intermittent impacts. Early coatings focused mainly on wear resistance, with hardness as the primary factor. Coatings like titanium nitride, while effective, have high friction coefficients, leading to significant heat generation during operation. To prevent tool overheating and deformation, which can affect accuracy and reduce lifespan, cutting fluids are commonly used. However, these fluids, especially those containing oil, pose serious environmental and regulatory challenges. Even the most eco-friendly fluids require special handling once discarded. Once mixed with oil and metal debris from machines, they become hazardous waste, subject to strict regulations by agencies like the EPA. Therefore, there's a growing need for tools that eliminate the need for cutting fluids while maintaining high-performance standards. Enter the CBN (Cubic Boron Nitride) superhard tools. Developed by Fu Nike Superhard Materials Co., Ltd., this PCBN tool series is designed for high-speed, high-efficiency cutting without the need for coolant. Thanks to its extreme hardness and excellent red hardness—capable of withstanding temperatures up to 2000°C—it outperforms ceramics in toughness and crack resistance. While it is more brittle than cemented carbide, it can machine hard metals on less rigid machines, making it ideal for difficult-to-cut materials. This versatility has led to widespread adoption in challenging industrial applications. Superhard tools like CBN grinding wheels also bring significant energy-saving benefits to green manufacturing. The market for superhard materials and eco-friendly products is rapidly expanding. According to industry reports, China currently produces 400,000 units of superhard tools and PCBN cutting tools annually, with sales under $200 million. However, authoritative studies suggest that the potential market for these tools could exceed $1.5 billion, highlighting a promising future for sustainable and high-performance machining solutions.
