At a recent industry conference, leaders from four major steel companies—Baosteel, Anshan Iron and Steel, Wuhan Iron and Steel (WISCO), and Hebei Iron and Steel Group—spoke about the critical importance of green development in shaping the future of the sector.
Xu Lejiang, chairman of Baosteel, emphasized that the challenges facing the Chinese steel industry are not just market-driven but deeply rooted in environmental and resource constraints. “Green development is no longer optional—it’s the ethical and legal bottom line for steel companies,†he said. He pointed out that rising costs of resources and environmental compliance are making it increasingly difficult for traditional steel producers to remain competitive. As a result, the industry must adapt or risk falling behind.
Zhang Xiaogang, general manager of Anshan Iron and Steel Group, echoed this sentiment, calling green steel one of the three main challenges for the industry. He highlighted the growing public concern over environmental issues and the pressure on steel plants located in urban areas to adopt greener practices. “Without a commitment to green development, sustainable growth is just an illusion,†he said. The current moment, he added, is a crucial turning point for Chinese steel companies.
Deng Qilin, chairman of Wuhan Iron and Steel, noted that the industry is at a crossroads, with structural adjustments and environmental reforms becoming unavoidable. He predicted that it could take five to ten years—or even longer—for China’s steel industry to fully transition. “Innovation and green strategies are not just short-term fixes; they’re essential for long-term competitiveness,†he said.
Wang Yifang, chairman of another leading steel group, stressed that low-carbon development is now a necessity, not just a moral obligation. “Resource shortages, environmental pressures, and rising costs have created a strong push for green transformation,†he said. He argued that the time has come for Chinese steel companies to embrace this change, as it’s no longer a choice but a survival imperative.
To achieve green steel, Xu Lejiang outlined three key pillars: energy efficiency and emission reduction in production, ecological product design, and the commercialization of green technologies. This approach ensures that steel manufacturing is not only environmentally friendly but also economically viable.
Several companies are already taking action. For example, Anshan Iron and Steel’s Bayuquan project has become a model for green and ecological steelmaking. It efficiently recycles resources, reduces waste, and minimizes emissions through advanced technology and smart management systems. Similarly, WISCO has focused on developing high-performance, energy-efficient steel products that help reduce energy consumption in downstream industries.
Baosteel has also been exploring new green business models, integrating environmental protection into its operations and expanding into related sectors such as energy conservation and waste recycling. These efforts reflect a broader shift toward sustainability across the industry.
Looking ahead, the concept of full-life-cycle evaluation of steel products is gaining traction. Deng Qilin pointed out that steel is highly recyclable, with 97% of by-products reusable. Advanced high-strength steel can significantly reduce carbon emissions, making it a key player in global sustainability efforts.
As the industry moves forward, the message from top leaders is clear: green development is not just a trend—it’s a fundamental requirement for the future of steel. State-owned enterprises must lead the way, setting the standard for responsible and sustainable industrial growth.
