Wuhu City Health Supervision Center, in collaboration with Zhongda Electronics Luhu Co., Ltd., recently organized a public awareness week themed “Preventing and Treating Occupational Diseases for the Happiness of 10 Million Families.†The event aimed to raise awareness among employers and workers about occupational health, focusing on the implementation of the Occupational Disease Prevention Law, preventive measures, and emergency response protocols.
During the event, experts highlighted that many people lack basic knowledge about occupational diseases. Li Kechang from the Municipal Health Supervision Office explained that there are 10 legally recognized categories of occupational diseases, totaling 115 types. In Wuhu, pneumoconiosis is one of the most common conditions, presenting symptoms such as coughing, phlegm production, chest pain, and shortness of breath. Some patients may also experience wheezing, hemoptysis, or systemic symptoms.
Occupational diseases often affect workers in industries like mining, furniture manufacturing, and casting. Employees must wear protective gear, such as dust masks, and undergo regular health check-ups. Currently, there are 10 qualified occupational disease inspection agencies in the city, including six hospitals in the urban area, five in the suburbs, and several specialized facilities like the Red Cross Hospital, Peace Hospital, Renji Orthopaedics Hospital, and the CDC. Workers can choose the nearest facility for their needs.
Li Kechang emphasized that both employers and employees play crucial roles in preventing occupational diseases. Employers must fulfill their legal obligations, while workers should be proactive in protecting themselves. Protective equipment provided by companies must be used correctly during work, not discarded due to discomfort.
At Zhongda Electronics, each workshop is equipped with digital signs displaying real-time data on temperature, humidity, and noise levels. Employees are well-equipped with safety tools, including safety shoes, glasses, earplugs, masks, gloves, and more. Huang Xianjun, an employee, shared, “These items are essential for daily tasks. For example, safety shoes protect against injuries, prevent slipping, and ensure stability.â€
An emergency drill was also conducted during the event to enhance workers’ understanding of occupational disease prevention and emergency procedures. At 10:30 AM, a simulated chemical spill occurred in the solvent storage room. Two warehouse managers were involved, with one suffering eye exposure to chemicals. The other immediately alerted the supervisor, who rushed the injured person to the first aid room.
The supervisor arrived at the scene, evacuated the area, and set up a perimeter. Firefighters and medical teams quickly responded, wearing full protective gear to handle the situation and prevent secondary incidents. Ambulance personnel used acid-resistant socks to contain the spill, placed it in hazardous waste bags, and transported it to a temporary storage area. Throughout the process, strict precautions were taken to avoid skin contact and further harm.
After the site was cleared, the supervisor conducted a headcount and confirmed everything was under control. The entire drill ran smoothly and according to plan, demonstrating effective preparedness.
