In the ancient world, fire has always been the greatest threat to paper. Time and again, precious documents were reduced to ashes in an instant, lost forever. However, this may soon change. On the 13th, the Shanghai Institute of Ceramics under the Chinese Academy of Sciences announced a groundbreaking development: they have successfully created a new type of inorganic "refractory paper" made from hydroxyapatite, capable of withstanding temperatures over 1000°C. The study was published in the prestigious European journal *European Chemistry*. This high-flexibility "fire-resistant paper" has a soft, milky white surface. Though its production process is similar to that of traditional paper, it uses entirely different materials. It can serve as a permanent storage medium for important texts, documents, and files, while also acting as a drug carrier, bone repair material, and even a water purifier by removing organic pollutants. Its applications range from medical treatments to fireproofing and high-temperature insulation. Traditional paper is known for its vulnerability—easy to burn, prone to discoloration. To overcome these flaws, a research team led by Dr. Zhu Yingjie at the Shanghai Institute of Ceramics spent six years searching for a better solution. They finally discovered hydroxyapatite, a natural mineral found in bones and teeth, which offers excellent biocompatibility, environmental safety, and long-term preservation qualities. Despite its advantages, hydroxyapatite is brittle and lacks flexibility, making it unsuitable for use as paper. Through extensive experimentation, the team developed a new method using calcium oleate as a precursor to create ultra-long hydroxyapatite nanowires. These nanowires were then used to fabricate the flexible refractory paper through a simple vacuum filtration technique. Currently, the production of this paper is limited to lab-scale. The researchers are working on optimizing the synthesis process to enable large-scale, cost-effective manufacturing. If successful, this innovation could significantly reduce reliance on traditional plant-based paper, helping to preserve forests and reduce environmental impact. The potential impact of this technology is enormous. It could revolutionize document preservation, medical applications, and sustainable material use. With further development, hydroxyapatite refractory paper might one day become a game-changer for both society and the environment.
